Lumping / splitting

In order to deepen our understanding, sometimes we have to find similarities between things that previously didn't seem similar (that's what I call lumping). And sometimes we need to see that we thought was one thing is really more than one (that's what I call splitting). Sometimes we need to lump, sometimes split. There's no general rule we can fall back on, about which to use in any particular situation. Neither one is better than the other in all circumstances. We need both.
