Some people, some of the time, form their opinions not by looking at the facts dispassionately, but rather by seeing what the majority believes and choosing to believe something else. This is not the same thing as bravely going against the weight of society (though the two stances may resemble each other). Contrarianism makes one a slave to majority opinion as much as conformism does.
